Welcome back everyone to a brand new term and a brand new year . . .

This will be the last newsletter of this academic year and so I must take this opportunity of wishing you all a good summer break. To the pupils in Year 2 - good luck at your new school in September.

Thank you for coming along to support your child at Sports Day this morning. The weather remained settled for us and we have been really lucky this year having sunshine for most of our annual summer events.

We are all looking forward to Pirate Day on Thursday. In response to questions from some of you - parents are only invited to watch the parade at the start of the day.

Many thanks to all the people who supported our book fair - we took an amazing £951.38, a percentage of which we can keep in books for the school.

Unfortunately the Junior School swimming pool is out of action this week so there will be no swimming this Friday - the children concerned will do an alternative activity

Shortly you will be receiving a newsletter from your FOMS committee giving you the fantastic news about the money raised through your efforts on Sunday. Despite the sudden downpour we managed to carry on - thank you so much for staying and for making the fair such a terrific success.

Thank you to Mrs Lazell for leading the recorder group who played beautifully at "Praise on the Plaza" last Sunday. Well done to the children who were able to come along

We are looking forward to one of many "Campus Events" that will take place during each school year. Pirate Day is booked for Thursday 2 July and we are all excited by the possibilities for learning.

It's good to be back and to find that summer has come to Mill Rythe.

"Fabulous", "Brilliant", "Live theatre, music + dance + a tale with a moral - wonderful". Just some of the parent reviews of the KS1 production which started its run today.

Last week a member of the public telephoned school to say that they had seen one of our pupils with an adult picking daffodils near the roundabout! I feel very sad that I have had to speak to the children about this.

You may remember just before half term receiving a letter from the governors regarding the proposal to shorten the current lunchtime break to one hour, and bring the finish of the school day forward by 15 minutes

Following the success of the KS1 unit of work entitled "Art AttacK" we are giving all the children in school the chance to take part in a new venture produced by Steve Porter - "BAGS OF ART".

I have recently received a letter from an elderly resident in Restawyle Avenue who is complaining about litter being thrown in the gardens there

I do hope that you had a good break last week - the children seem excited and happy to be back and the staff here had a very positive training day yesterday.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to complete our Questionnaire. Governors and staff have analysed your responses and the results point to two main areas of concern. These are parking and the footpaths around the playgrounds.

I think this year has been the wettest and coldest since I started here in 2001! Although it is difficult for us to store wellies we can manage, and they make life so much easier for the children and for us too with the continuing rain.

Year 2 Residential Trip to Minstead - I would like to remind parents of Year 2 children that their 2nd payment is due by this Friday, 30 January

Just a reminder that the information session on maths will take place tomorrow night at 7.00pm. The meeting for parents with children in Year 2 who are going to the Minstead Study Centre in July will be held beforehand at 6.30pm. Both meetings will take place in the Hall.

There will be a special lunch on Friday 13 February, the main course will be as per the HC3S Menu

Next week we intend to start our special Friday Activity Afternoons. There are a couple of changes for this year . . .

The countdown to Christmas has begun now that December is upon us, and of course this bitterly cold weather too.

With this newsletter you will receive a copy of a questionnaire designed by our governing body to consult you as parents on a wide range of issues. I do hope that you will be able to take a few moments to complete it and return it to school as your views are valued.

Well done to all the members of FOMS (Friends of Mill Rythe Infant School) for a really successful Christmas Shopping Evening last Wednesday. Not only was it a very successful evening in terms of the sum of money raised but it was a wonderful community event . . .

There will be a Christmas Lunch for the children on Tuesday 16 December.

Thank you to those of you who attended the curriculum meeting last night with a focus on 'Reading'. If you could not attend, copies of the information given out will be available from your child's class teacher at Parent Teacher Interviews or from the front reception.

As this half term comes to a close can I remind you that Friday, 24 October has been allocated as one of the five non-pupil days that the government has designated for staff training? School finishes on Thursday with the FOMS Hallowe'en Disco and we all return on Monday, 3 November.

This coming Thursday, 16 October, the five Hayling schools are joining together for a Food Festival to which you are warmly invited.

Can I say "thank you" and "well done" to the 32 children who came along to St Mary's Parish Church on Sunday and sang the 'Harvest Song'? Mrs Lazell and I were very proud of them.

Yesterday after assembly I reminded the children that their Reading Challenge cards should be back in school by tomorrow, Wednesday, so that I can see how well they have done. We intend to have a celebration on Friday afternoon.

Thank you so much for coming in and supporting the School Book Fair which took the fantastic sum of 914.60.

I have set all Year 1 and 2 children a 'Reading Adventure' Challenge. I do hope that you will help them to achieve an award.

A warm welcome back. It has been lovely to see how much the children have grown during the summer break and we are delighted with the maturity they are showing as they build new class groups.

It was with great sadness that we said our goodbyes this morning in assembly to Mrs Williams, Miss Carter and Miss Shedden. We send them off with warm good wishes and our thanks for all they have contributed to the life at Mill Rythe.

The first of the Year 2 groups left yesterday for their 2¹/₂ day visit to Minstead in the New Forest and we know that they will have a wonderful experience.

Sports Day - Thank you so much for coming along and supporting us this morning. We were so lucky with the weather, weren't we? Congratulations and well done to White Team who earned the most points.

This week we would just like to remind you of the events planned for the rest of this term - and we also refer you to the school calendar for the next academic year. Please note that the first day back, Wednesday 3 September, is a non-pupil day, so the children will return to school on Thursday 4 September.

Last night the staff stayed late to welcome new parents of the 75 children we admit to Mill Rythe next September. We were very proud of the small group of current pupils who put on a very professional fashion show promoting the school uniform!

So many of you have reported that it was a super day on Sunday - the weather was perfect and there was such a lovely community feel to our Summer Fair.

I do hope that you all had a good week's break. We must just hope that this spell of wet weather doesn't spoil the plans for next Sunday's Summer Fair.

It is just a very short while until the Summer Fair on Sunday 8 June.

Walk on Wednesday - Thursday and Friday too! Yes, this week we hope that you will add Friday to your efforts to walk at least a part of the way to school ready for "Walk to School Week"

I would like to thank Dan Jones at Seacourt for the arrangements that he was able to make at short notice to provide a sports activity day for working parents during Thursday's strike action.

Industrial Action - Thursday 24 April 2008 - Following my note to you on 3 April, and after consulting with the Chair of Governors, I can now confirm that the school will be closed this Thursday, 24 April.

If you haven't been to see 'Resurrection Rock' yet you are in for a real treat;

Parents' Consultation Day - Friday 4 April - This is the opportunity for you to come along with your child to meet their teacher (and any other adult who works with them on a regular basis).

Thank you for sending in vouchers to enable us to save for equipment - we are collecting Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers, Nestle Box Tops for Books and Sainsburys AK08 vouchers.

We are all thrilled with the response to the governors' WALK ON WEDNESDAY campaign which started last week.

A reminder that "Walk on Wednesdays" starts tomorrow. The weather forecast looks good.

We do not have sufficient volunteers yet to start up a walking bus BUT last week's working party has come up with a super plan to help to reduce the traffic congestion directly outside school.

This will be the last newsletter of 2007 and although we still have 6 days of school left, I want to send you all, on behalf of the staff and governors, warm good wishes for a joyful Christmas and happiness and health in 2008.

The days are drawing in, a sign that Christmas really is just around the corner, and this week Year R children are performing a Carnival for their families on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Headlice - PLEASE can parents check their child's hair and treat if necessary - we have a few nit combs in the office if you need one - as this seems to be a continuing problem around the school at the moment.

Please remember, if your child normally has a roast dinner on a Wednesday, on 5 December it will be the special Christmas dinner which will only be available if you have pre-ordered it.

Friday is going to be a very busy day for us all. Firstly we are supporting Children in Need and will be holding a SPOTTY NON UNIFORM DAY

We have poppies for sale in school. These will be brought around the classrooms each day if your child would like to bring in a donation.

The children in Years 1 and 2 were blessed with lovely weather for their 'surprise' visit to Paultons Park yesterday.

Don't forget that next week is the Half Term holiday - school finishes on Friday and starts again on Monday, 29 October.

On Friday, sadly we say farewell to Miss Rachel Oakshott who has been a Teaching Assistant at Mill Rythe for a couple of years.

We will be celebrating Red Nose Day this coming Friday, 16 March, by coming to school dressed in RED.

The decorators hope to have finished their work during the middle part of this week and I want to thank you for your patience in coping with their apparatus and the changes in access that have been necessary.

Sadly, just before half-term we said goodbye to Mrs Lomas who has left us to join a company in Fareham.

It seems that we are all overdue a break - you will have noticed that we have a number of staff off with flu and many children too.

We are delighted that a "spruce-up" of the outside of the school including re-decoration of painted areas is to take place from next Monday, 12 February.

For those of you with children starting in Year R in 2007, this is a reminder that we require the acceptance slips back by next Monday, 5 February

Congratulations to Year R for their delightful portrayal of the nativity in the performances of 'Whoops a Daisy Angel' last week

Good luck to everyone in Year R with their three performances of "Whoops a Daisy Angel!" this week.

Yesterday the children very much enjoyed recording the songs that they have been learning - you will have received a letter giving details of how you can purchase a copy of the CD.

A few parents have still not returned their CJ2 Forms to us - please ensure you do this by midday on Friday 17 November 2006 to have the best chance of your child attending the Junior School of your choice.

If you have a child in Year 2 please remember to return your CJ2 form for transfer to Junior School by the deadline of midday on Friday 17 November 2006.

We feel refreshed after the break and the very busy first half of this term and intend to give the children a good run up to the Christmas celebrations.

We would like to remind you that we have a non-pupil day this Friday, 20 October. This means that the children will finish for the half term holiday on Thursday 19 October.

We would like to remind you that we have three non-pupil days during the next two weeks - Thursday and Friday, 12 and 13 October this week and Friday 20 October next week.

Imagine our surprise, last week, when we came into school and found a brand new sundial in the Bog Garden!

We can't believe how well our new children are settling in! They seem to be taking all the new routines in their stride, and we are extremely proud of them.
