School Life
ArrivalYear 1 and 2 pupils meet in the front playground for the start of the day. There will be two whistles - the first whistle will be a signal for your child to say goodbye and for you to leave the playground. The second whistle is their signal to line up with their teacher and/or the teaching assistant. We are aware that there may be one or two children who find starting the day hard but once they are in and settled the tears rarely last long! Mrs Lazell and Mrs Lock will usually be on hand to help with this and are available for any message that you may want to pass on to the class teacher. The Head and/or her Deputy endeavour to be in the playground from 8.30 am. If not, there is always a teacher or two on duty outside so parents may safely leave their child(ren) if they need to get away quickly. Children must not be left alone before 8.30 am.
When we have severe or inclement weather, eg rain, frost or high wind, or it is deemed too cold, children should be taken directly to their classroom door. DOORS ARE OPENED AT 8.30 a.m. ON THESE DAYS. Parents should only enter the school building at the beginning of the day if they wish to contact the administration staff. A security button to the left of the main front door will help you to gain access. The Year R wing is opened at 8.40 am and, once your child is familiar with the routines and settled, we suggest that they say "goodbye" at the classroom door and come in on their own. This means that they are establishing their independence. We're late - what should we do?If you have missed the line-up and the children have already gone into class, please take your child(ren) in through the main entrance door and report to the administration office. Do not take your child(ren) to class - admin staff will ensure they are registered and then make sure they reach their classroom(s). Going HomeParents should collect children from outside their classroom door - not the school gate - at 3.15 pm. This means that staff can ensure that children only go home with the parent/carer or an adult nominated by their parent. Those travelling home by the school bus are taken to the bus stop and escorted on to the bus by duty staff. Help - I won't Make it in Time!If you are caught in traffic or somehow unable to collect your child at the designated time please telephone the office and inform the administration staff who will see that your child is adequately supervised. If you are unable to get a message through, don't worry - your child will be looked after! Depending upon what an individual teacher's commitments are after 3.15, they may stay in the classroom for a short while, but then uncollected children will be taken to the front office area to wait. Please come in through the main entrance and make sure whoever is on duty knows that you have collected your child! Someone else collecting?Make sure you inform your child's teacher (and your child!) of the collector's name. A note is best. Indeed, the class teacher should be informed of any change of routine from the norm. What would happen if . . .. . . Mill Rythe Infants needed to close and/or vacate the school during our normal working hours in the event of an emergency or bad weather? Staff would try to contact parents or their nominated representatives by telephone, (PLEASE ensure that we have a telephone number we can reach you on during school hours) and get as many children as possible off site quickly and safely. If we needed to vacate the premises we would ask the Junior School if we could use their hall until all children had been picked up. We would ensure that your child was looked after by a member of staff until you were able to make arrangements for collection. Obviously in the event of bad weather we would want those staff who live off the island to leave very promptly, but there are enough of us who live close to school who would take up the duty of care. |
