Organisation/School Uniform SCHOOL UNIFORM
Rationale
We believe that wearing school uniform encourages a sense of belonging and of being part of the community. School uniform can also give children a sense of pride in their school and in their own appearance. It also promotes high standards of educational achievement.
Aims
- To promote the school's aim of working together as a community.
- To encourage children to identify with each other and therefore to care about each other.
- To foster a sense of belonging and unity.
- To ensure that children wear clothing that is practical and safe.
- To eliminate competition among children in what they wear.
- To promote the image of the school within the local area.
Practice
- We rely on parents' support with regard to the maintenance of good standards of dress ie the school's chosen uniform.
- PE / Games kit is important both for safety and practicality. Children should bring their kit in a named bag to be left in school on the first day of each half term. Kit will be sent home at the end of each half term for cleaning.
- Items of uniform carrying the school logo are available. Details, prices and how to order information is available from the school office.
- Similar items in the school colours are perfectly acceptable.
- Fashion items are not appropriate
- Children are expected to wear shoes that are practical, safe and comfortable, sensible sandals may be worn when weather conditions allow.
- Wellington boots are a sensible option for coming in to school during wet weather. The child should change into shoes on entering the classrooms.
- Children should bring a coat or jacket, as appropriate for the weather conditions, for play times, lunch times and other outdoor sessions.
- No kind of jewellery is allowed, with the exception of watches and studs for pierced ears. The children must be responsible for looking after these themselves.
- All jewellery and watches must be removed for PE or Games. Children are responsible for removing or taping over their own earrings.
- All items brought to school should be clearly marked with the child's name.

Swimming
Children may be given the opportunity to enjoy an informal swim session (eg during Golden Time) at Mill Rythe Junior School. Parents/carers will be notified in advance.
If possible girls should wear a one piece swimsuit, boys trunks or swim shorts. All children must wear a swim hat in accordance with the Junior School policy.
Sports Day and Teams
Children may be divided into teams drawn across all year groups and asked to wear t-shirts in team colours. Parents will be notified of the colour required in advance. If the child does not possess the appropriately coloured t-shirt, efforts will be made to borrow one.
Non School Uniform Days
On various days throughout the school year, there will be reasons for not wearing normal school uniform. For example:
- Some school trips where uniform is not practical
- Fundraising or collecting of goods, eg charity or upcoming fair
- In school activities where uniform is not practical, or for special events
All clothing, including shoes, should be practical, safe and comfortable, and appropriate for the weather conditions. Parents will be given notice of requirements.
Cultural, race, religious and other considerations
Mill Rythe Infant School will be considerate to the needs of different cultures, races and religions and also cases of financial hardship. Pupils will not be made to feel uncomfortable, nor discriminated against, because their parents/carers do not provide them with the right school uniform.
All uniform matters should be discussed with the Head Teacher.
A review of this policy will be conducted on an annual basis to ensure Best Value has been achieved.
