The School Aims/Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools Partnership at Mill Rythe Infant School

Why do we need to be a "healthy school"?

The "Every Child Matters 2004 - Change for Children" outlines a framework for achieving 5 outcomes which matter most to children and young people:

  • being healthy
  • staying safe
  • enjoying and achieving
  • making a positive contribution
  • having economic well being

The National Healthy Schools evaluation found that children in validated schools were:

  • less likely to feel bullied
  • less likely to have used drugs
  • more likely to gain higher levels of academic attainment
  • more likely to feel at ease with the doctor
  • less likely to watch TV
  • less likely to play truant

By 2009 all schools should have enhanced Healthy School status.

We believe we already meet many of the required criteria - some examples include:

  • access to fresh drinking water throughout the day
  • hot school dinners meet standards
  • the school is involved in the "Sports Partnership"
  • all children are offered a piece of fruit on a daily basis
  • a unified approach to healthy eating
  • physical activity
  • strong policies are adhered to

but in all we have to meet 45 objectives regarding the whole school approach and a further 49 under four "Key Themes" to prove it!  Each objective has to be fully evidenced.
