History
Studying history brings about an understanding of how present day lifestyles have evolved, the way we live today has been directly shaped by the decisions of people who lived in the past.
We endeavour to give children first hand experiences in the immediate locality to stimulate their interest as well as the use of artefacts and letters as evidence. |

Geography
Geography in our school is the study of places and the people who live in them.
The local environment such as buildings and the beaches are used as well as places that children may have travelled to.
For example, the children in year 2 have compared our local Parish church with one in Portsmouth.
Map work is basic to any geographical study and children work to refine their map reading as they move through the school. |
Music
Children listen to a range of music and learn songs. This year we will be joining in with a Hampshire run scheme 'Listen to me'. Each class in Key Stage One will have the opportunity to learn an instrument with a specialist teacher. They also have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder.
The school music specialist runs a choir and at Christmas time the whole school is involved in a Carol Service. Year groups perform musical productions.
The infant school choir has sung at the local Hayling Choir Carol Concert and at St Mary's Church. |

Displays of children's work have an important place in our school. |
Art
Art is an enjoyable and enriching experience. Children are given many opportunities to observe and record using a range of materials.
They will learn about some of our famous artists, their styles and their work as well as comparing examples of art from other cultures and eras.
For the past few years a week devoted to Art and the Environment has been held in the Summer Term. A collaberation between Mill Rythe Infant School and South Downs College produced striking and exciting works of art, and we have been delighted to have the opportunity twice to work with Steve Porter. |
Physical Education
We make good provision for the children to develop their skills across a variety of sporting activities such as gymnastics, athletics, movement and dance and games.
Each class is timetabled for two weekly sessions and in good weather these are taken outside.
We are fortunate to have the opportunity of using the neighbouring Junior school's swimming pool |

Design Technology
Children develop design skills working with cardboard, textiles, wood, food and construction kits. They investigate moving parts and different ways of fixing and connecting.
By studying simple existing structures, children learn to plan, make and evaluate their own constructions. |
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
ICT is being given an increasingly high profile in all schools. It is the subject of an elevated level of investment.
Children access the internet, use digital and movie cameras and develop keyboard skills. Word processing and data handling are used to support all areas of the curriculum.
Programmable toys introduce children to the beginnings of control technology.
School staff use interactive whiteboards as an additional teaching and learning tool.
