Skills

"THRASS is a whole-school phonics programme for teaching learners, of any age, about the building blocks of reading and spelling, that is, the 44 phonemes (speech sounds) of spoken English and the graphemes (spelling choices) of written English.

The programme teaches learners that, basically, when spelling we change phonemes to graphemes and when reading we change graphemes to phonemes."

All the Mill Rythe Infant School teaching staff, and one governor, completed the two day Professional Development Course to become Thrass Certified Teachers on 12/13 October 2006.  Resources, such as the class picture charts, have been on display in the school for a while so they are familiar to the children.

The THRASS website is well worth a visit for more information, free downloads, video clips and a dedicated area for parents.  A wide range of resources are available for purchase through the on-line shop.

THRASS PHONEME MACHINE

The THRASS Phoneme Machine is a groundbreaking computer programme that uses the International Phonetic Alphabet and moving human lips to demonstrate the pronunciation of sounds (phonemes) and hundreds of frequently used English words.  Use the free (limited) on-line version or download.  The full version is available for purchase.
